Abstract

This research aims to describe the problem-solving abilities of students at SMP Negeri 2 Panjatan based on John Dewey's theory of solving two-variable linear equation systems. The type of research used in this research is qualitative case study research. Based on the research results, it can be seen that students' mathematical solving abilities are in the high category. Supported by research results that 11 students in class VIII B had high problem-solving abilities seen from the test results of 25 students in terms of John Dewey's theory. The results of the test of students' mathematical problem-solving abilities found data that in class VIII B students in solving problems on systems of linear equations in two variables, there were students who explained the answers by the problem-solving steps according to John Dewey and there were also students who explained the answers not by the problem-solving steps according to John Dewey. Interviews were conducted with 3 students selected as research subjects, aimed at finding intensive data based on problem-solving abilities. In the interview process, researchers selected students who were easy to communicate with. There are 9 students with medium-category problem-solving abilities. Meanwhile, students with low-category problem-solving abilities consisted of 5 students. So it can be concluded that the mathematical problem-solving abilities of class VIII B students based on John Dewey's theory are high.
